Some of the colors don't match at all, but I'm trying to keep the One-Side-Cool-Colors-One-Side-Warm-Colors idea. So far it's working. I'm not being very fussy because it's an afghan and I don't have to wear it in public. It's a perfect size right now: not too big to flip around and large enough to cover my lap/legs while I work on it. Definitely a cold weather project. Or at least a 'You've got the heat turned down too low' project. It's about 2.5-3' square. Just embarking on a new log cabin and so I thought I'd post it. I’m so excited! I messed up the border a little, but I see it as a learning experience, considering that I didn’t follow any directions other than the idea that it was sort of like the parts of a picture frame; and that the inner edge is at an angle so that the pieces could fit together. I went with a thin border because I didn’t want it to take away from the rest of the blanket. I didn’t block this or anything. I think that maybe I should because one side looks longer than the rest. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Whew, with this blanket finally done, I can start on two baby blankets that I want to do. One will be LCB and the other will be a granny square type. I am thinking that I will work on them both together to start off, just to see how it works out. A.C. Moore just had a Moonlight Madness sale and I took advantage and bought all the baby colors of the Caron’s Simply Soft that I could get. The green is not really a baby green, but so beautiful; which is why I want to make a granny square blanket. I am planning on using that green to connect everything. I love this green so much that I wanted it incorporate it into more than just a border…yet, it’s not really a baby color. I am convinced that it will work in nicely, though. The yarn is still in the car and it’s too late for me to run out and get it, so, stay tuned for a pic of all the colors.

I also got a few other balls, not related to my baby projects. Still trying to decide what to do with them… I think THAT is the hardest part of any project, just deciding the project!

MDK Bath Mat

Here's the MDK bath mat. I made it from Sugar 'N Cream cotton in Ecru and White. I didn't use the 8 ply as directed but used 4 strands of 4 ply instead. It was easy and fast to knit. I would love input as maybe you can visualize it better than I. Please let me know if you don't think combining the black and white & primary colors on the same blanket. Maybe one of each?

At any rate, this one I am planning on doing a black border. I'm afraid I am as new to this blogging thing as to knitting Log Cabin Blankets. I'm even newer to Blogger, though I have an old attempt at a blog floating around here somewhere. This is my first contribution to a team blog... is that what they call these?

I am a SAHM doing a little baby sitting when needed. I have a 2 yr old boy and so, you can imagine that I don't have all that much time to knit... but I work it out. I take my knitting everywhere, "just in case", including parish meetings and choir practice... whenever I can. If you want to know more about me, you can find more info here.

I am working on my first LCB and was curious as to what others were doing, and that is how I found this blog. However I got here, I am glad that I am here. The most up-to-date pic of my blanket is here on one of my posts. I have done 2 or 3 more layers of stripes since then and I think this will be it as I want to finish it, and start on one made of real bright primary colors for a new baby in the family. Today I checked out "Mason Dixon Knitting" for the first time and I am absolutely in love with the curvy ones, though I have no idea how they are done. Didn't buy the book because I was really there for some other material.

Well, I guess that is enough for now. Thankfully, the bind-off makes its own nice border, so I was OK with it.

Yarn used - Red Heart 100% acrylic (less than 1 skein of each color - 6 colors total)... not a bad little stash buster! If I ever do one again, I'm doing it on GIGANTIC needles with 2 strands held together so it goes by faster...

I'll have to restart the log-cabin afghan

The log-cabin afghan has been declared 'too short'. My son said that by adding another row of squares at the bottom and one at the side, the afghan would be big enough (no garanties that he will actually use it). That means I have to knit 13 squares, undo the border and reknit that. At the rate I am knitting now, I estimate this is another month of knitting and sewing. I guess I am not yet done with this project ! I decided to use up the Rowan cotton glace I was saving for a Kaffe Fassett design.
I made a picture of the back of the afghan - you can see that the stitching is visible (I don't know what this stitch is called in English).

promised pictures

I promised some pictures of my finished afghan. My sister and I are making an afghan for our grandma and grandpa in New Mexico. She crochets and I knit, what betterpattern than a log cabin (instead of doing squares... zzzzz) for a combined project?

The goal is to attempt not to repeat a stitch patterns. Already we are seeing some problems with this, since different stitches have different gauges, specifically-- ribbing. The cables pull in, but I expected that. I am sure that as we go on and we learn more (esp about picking up the proper ammount of stitches) the blanket will even out more.

You can click it to see it a little bigger. Another problem I think we will have is that the crochet is the top and bottom and the knitting is the left and right. Should we stick it out like that? I have knitted all the yarn I had intended to go in this blanket up now. I was aiming for a very big blanket - I have 28 squares now, and it just is not long enough (according to the recipient - DS). As I wanted to do this solely from stash, I was in a quandry - use the remaining cotton that had 'KF vest' written on it, or not ? I decided to use them after all. I just need 4 squares. After that I plan to knit a wide border around the blanket. That should add length and width also. I have found 9 balls of a very dark brownish red in my stash. It's a bit heavier weight then the cotton glace and Anny Blatt yarns I am using right now, so I cannot use this to knit squares, but I think it will work for the borders.

square 14 and 15

experimented some more with colors (more info on my blog)

started a blog -square 13

I have started a blog and would like to ad the log-cabin button to my blog. I think I like it.

Log Cabin Blanket Finished!!

I'm happy to report that I am finished with my log cabin blanket. It was my goal to finish it by the end of August and I ended up finishing it on September 3 instead. I am extremely pleased with how it turned out. Maybe I have too many colors going on at once? As it gets bigger and there are more repeats of the colors I am liking it more - so we'll see. :)

This is in Elann Sonata again.

I know some people have been keeping the stitches live rather than casting off and picking up. Loved the colors and how they looked together so I decided to try my hand at a log cabin blanket to show off the two yarns. And here it is! But just between you and me (okay.. and the other millions of knitter who every tried this) picking up stitches on this yarn is like trying to drive on a super foggy night wearing sunglasses.......almost impossible....almost. The reason that the edges look all ruffley is because I decided to crochet the border......(I just couldn't stand to pick up one more row of stitches)
Anyway after beginning the blanket I started thinking about the baby who would be using it and decided I'd best keep it small for a stroller/car type blanket. This yarn I just to furry/hairy to make a crib blanket for a baby. The long fibers could stick to the baby's nose and mouth causing breathing issues. I had a serious scare with my little guy just a few weeks after we brought him home from the hospital with a similar blanket.
So in conclusion this blanket it great for use: a) in a stroller because it doesn't drag and it's warm
b) in a car for the car seat or c) for a much older child (maybe) to sleep on.
And yes, I had a great time making it!

Log cabin keeps growing

Hello, I just joined the KAL. I read about it on the Mason Dixon KAL. The picture is my log cabin blankie. I plan on doing four more rounds of logs and then I'll be done. I try to knit at least one "log" every day or two. The "logs" have gotten sooo long and they take a good amount of time. The yarn I'm using is just Sugar & Cream.
my blog

new member

Surprise surprise, I actually got invite from blogger, too! Hi, I'm anastacia. I'm knitting my first ever knitted afghan (usually I crochet them) & it's a log cabin! I'm using up my stash of woolease (I'm doing the summer of stash, and that was part of my plan - to use up woolease) to make a log cabin. I have mainly oatmeal color, so I'm not sure how it'll turn up, I'm just going to knit each square until I run out of color or get bored. It'll be fun! thanks for having me!!

My Log Cabin Progress

I've actually completed a few more bars than this picture would show, but my camera is packed. I'll update soon. I have four rows of bars finished, and I think I can call it quits at six--it'll be baby blanket size then, and that's the whole point of it. I'm doing it in a million colors of KnitPicks Wool of the Andes...I WAY overbought yarn for this project. I'll be making felted bags for years to come. The WotA is inexpensive, but rough, so we'll see how well it turns out. I do love the colors though!

Moderne Log Cabin

My first Log Cabin Blanket!

This isn't the best photo - garter stitch always seems to mess with my camera, as if it doesn't really know what to focus on.

I'm still trying to decide if I should crochet a single line of border. If I did I think I would use the dark wine color or maybe the lightest bluish one - the one that isn't on any of the edge strips. What do you guys think? Border or no?

The Stats:
The Pattern: Moderne Baby Blanket from Mason Dixon Knitting
The Yarn: Elann Endless Summer Collection Sonata
2 skeins of 2138 Mauve (color A)
3 skeins of 6399 Lilac (color B)
4 skeins of 6319 Soft Periwinkle (color C)
3 skeins of 6960 Victorian Grape (color D)
The Needles: Addi Turbo Circs #5 47"
I didn't need needles that long until the last strip of the blanket though. 32" might have worked.

What I learned: I LOVE LOG CABIN BLANKETS!!! The possibilities are endless as will be the number of Log Cabin blankets you will be seeing on this blog. :) Ever since I started this blanket I have been envisioning others - different colors, different blocks, different materials. I could hardly wait to finish this one so I could get on to the next one.

I based the color scheme of this blanket on my daughter's favorite toy. This morning when I told her it was finished she grabbed it and loved on it saying "Blankie, blankie!". I have some adorable photos of that. :)

My time on this from start to finish was about two weeks. I've already started another one in a different style and color scheme.

Published Log Cabin!

I've been log-cabin-ing my little heart out...I just couldn't post about it before!

My log-cabin pillow was published in the newest edition of For the Love of Yarn!

I'd love some feedback on the design or on the clarity of instructions.
Thanks for all the inspiration!

Log Cabin finished!

Hi all, I've finished my Log Cabin. I am still looking for a way to incorporate the denim yarn. First my plan was to knit solid blue squares, and using them in the blanket. Now I am convinced that the 'blue' squares also need to have a small central square, that stands out. In my stash I have 2 colors of denim yarn, a very dark blue, and a light blue. I went to the yarn store, to check if this yarn also exists in cream/natural as the Rowan denim yarn. Turns out that it comes in 3 shades of blue. What I have is the dark and the medium blue. I bought an extra ball of the lightest blue. I decided to knit a square with the light and medium color. I expect it to shrink, so I knitted it on a larger needle (3mm), and made the bands a bit wider. Looks like I still need to experiment a bit, I am not convinced yet that this will work.
A new plan is emerging - why not knit a second log-cabin out of denim yarn ? If I would have my own blog, I could put the 2 buttons up!

not much progress
<>Sorry, not too much progress on my log-cabin. I have been working on my crochet blanket the last few days. I want it finished ! Also, I had a frozen shoulder problem last year, and when I knit too much it acts up again. One of my New Years resolutions was not to overdo it, and limit knitting to strictly one hour a day. Starting a log-cabin was maybe not the smartest thing to do. I figured I could knit on 'just one block'. I find it very addictive to 'finish that block', and one block takes around five hours.</>
Anyway, I have been thinking about my log cabin. I still want to use the denim yarn, and was thinking about knitting solid color blocks, washing/shrinking those and incorporating that in the afghan. I have been surfing around to find nice lay-outs for an afghan with an even number of multicolored and solid blocks. I am not a quilter (tried it, didn't like all the sewing). I found this free software for quilters : http://www.quiltmakersoftware.com

Anybody knows this ? I like how the colors work together. A comment was to make a baby blanket, or cushion cover. That would work, but I really want a blanket size finished product. My teenage son and daughter both have their TV blanket. These look so old and tattered, that I really want some new ones. (I don't know if they will agree to give up their old blankies ! - actually old sleeping bags).

I started crocheting a blanket, and as that went fast, I started knitting one also. I just think the knitted one will take a lot longer to finish. It will probably be a two year project. That's OK, because I plan to have my living room redecorated by then. I add a picture of my crochet blanket, I hope that's OK. It's nearly finished, but it's a bit scractchy (shetland wool). I'll probably have to line it.

swatches

Time to show some swatches ! I have a bad experience with a sweater in Rowan cotton glace - it stretched out so horrible ! Now I have a dress instead of a sweater. This sweater was knitted on 3,5mm in reverse stockinette. Some of the yarn I use here are leftovers from that sweater !

Anyhow, I decided that a firm gauge for a blanket was essential. This is my swatch on 3mm :

Still thought the gauge was too loose, and tried it on 2,5 mm. I had to go out to buy new needles, the only 2,5mm I had were bent, and very old. I don't usually knit on 2,5mm ! (except socks, but I have small dpns for that purpose). So this is my first square, knitted on 2,5mm :

I'll show a bit more of my progress tomorrow.

joining

hello,

My name is Dominique, I live in Belgium, and I started a log cabin blanket (sounds like an intro to anonymous something ...). I am not good at English, not good at photograpy, new at blogging ....but I do like to knit, and share, and hope to find a forum to do so here.

Probably some of you are on the knitlist also, so if I repeat myself I do apologize. The best thing about blogging is that you can share pictures, so I intend to do that here. I don't have my own blog (yet).

I made a firm resolution to knit from stash, and I don't have enough cotton in different colors to knit this kind of blanket. Surfing around I found another nice blanket, by Mari in Portugal http://www.pura-lana.blogspot.com/ (scroll down a bit to see the blanket).

In my stash I found Rowan cotton glace leftovers, and Anny Blatt 'Louxor' and 'Assouan' (both Egyptian mercerized cottons) in shades of pumpkin, browns (chocolate, mocha, taupe), burgundy and brick red, rust, sunflower, a bit of pink, olive and fuchsia. It works together, but I don't have enough. I also found 12 balls of Schachenmayr Nomotta Blue Jeans. This is a denim yarn that fades and shrinks like the Rowan Denim. I have used 3 balls to knit a baby sweater. I remember it being softer to work with then the Rowan Denim, and gets even softer after washing. The shrinking is less also. I think this pale blue denim color would work well with my other colors.

Because of the special nature of the denim yarn (it shrinks), I asked the knitlist what to do, and most people advised against using it together with the other cottons. So that plan is out. I'll have to think about what to do next, but for the time being I have enough cotton to keep me knitting for some time. Just not enough to finish a blanket.

I tried to get the lay-out right, but don't seem to be able to put the pictures where I want them (in the text). I tried 10 times, so I'll leave it like this. Maybe somebody can help me with this ?
In my next post I can show you some of my progress.

Dominique

Starting out...

Well, I cast on for my log cabin afghan... it's fairly fast going right now, but I know as the strips get bigger that it will feel like a never ending thing :)

I think the biggest challenge is keeping my guage. I've noticed that the longer I knit, the more I relax... I want a square blanket, not a wonky diamond. Maybe restricting myself to one strip a night will help keep my laziness in check.

I can see that I'm going to need some new needles... my stitches are getting pretty close together on the needle. I have tons of DK weight cotton in my monstrosity of a stash, and thought that I could get a fair bit done with what I had on hand. Plus I'd been drifting around in the knitting doldrums for a week or so before the book came. I needed a project to sink my teeth into - and by golly I sure got one! This is planned to be a bedspread for my queen sized bed. I'm about 19% done as of the wee hours of last night. 7/36ths done! Whoo hoo - it's taken me a couple of weeks to get this far - and I've been working fairly steadily on it. It's really not a good project for take-along knitting, but I did take it for a road trip that we did last weekend and made some progress.

I ended up starting out with smaller needles than were probably necessary - I swear I thought they were somewhere around a 3.75 mm (US 5) but I couldn't find my needle gauge, and of course after I figured out that I was actually doing a Queen sized blanket on size 3mm (US 3's) I'd already put a lot of work into this puppy. But I do like the fabric!

I put my current spindle in the shot up there on the top right hand corner so you can get some idea of scale. It's silk that I'm spinning on my walks at lunch time.

I'm really having a lot of fun with this - and I'm loving seeing everyone elses projects! Keep up the good work - I'll post again when I get to 9 squares and show you some other layout possibilities with multiple log cabin squares. Of course I have to say that I'm very envious of all you out there working on one big cabin - no sewing together at the end! I'm not looking forward to that part.

Have fun!

Abigale

Hello!!

Thanks for letting me join! I am planning a dishcloth or three to start as I use up partial balls of cotton. I do prayer shawls with a church group and I'm collecting lots of small balls of the yarn I use for them; I think I will Log Cabin them, too. I hadn't planned on a bathmat, but since String Bean mentioned it in the first post the idea has begun to call to me.

Hi! and buttons...

Hi, I'm Tara, and I'm so excited to get Log-Cabining! I think I'll start with some washcloths (for Mother's Day...better get crackin'!) and then move onto The Blanket.
I have several blankets planned:

1. My handpainted yarn...I'll use the throw for fiber festivals to show off my colorways. I'm still thinking through the layout of colors, because I don't want it to be too crazy. I'm thinking of many small logcabin squares, cool colors on one side and warm on the other, then line them up in a traditional quilt pattern (so all the cool colors make some larger pattern...I'll show pictures of examples when I have them)

2. Blues...made from all my blue yarn scraps....probably a bit more modern, closer to freeform knitting...picking up stitches and knitting until the yarn runs out. I picture it with a mitered border from a blue yarn I have lots of...that is, unless I find another use for that yarn.

3. In-Law throw....not sure yet, but I'm collecting ideas and yarn. I have 3 skeins of dk green Malabrigo and 2 Point Five skeins in Monet (a blend of pastels and greens).

Ok, enough of me, I'd like to share some buttons (I hope that's ok):

Use them at will, and enjoy!

Welcome to the Land O' Garter Stitch

This KAL was made for Garter Stitching Log Cabiners. It doesn't have to be an afghan. Feel free to Log Cabin away on a bathmat, a washcloth, a curtain, a rug...a log cabin sweater (hm, boxy). I'm not fond of kals with a lot of rules so I won't make this kal have many rules. Let's try to stick to Log Cabin knitting though. Go talk about your aran sweater on your own blog.
